Ice Cream Sundae: As Sweet As It Sounds?

Updated: Nov 19, 2019

Inhaler, a band from Dublin, are underestimated by many, but despite that, they are an electric group determined to change that. Formed in 2016, the lads include Ryan McMahon on drums, Josh Jenkinson on lead guitar, Robert Keating on bass, and finally Elijah Hewson on vocals and guitar.

In March of 2018, they released their first two songs: I Want You and Is She My Girl (Demo). Then the lads took a year long break and focused on touring which scored them loads of new fans. In March of 2019, they finally released two more songs titled 'It Won't Always Be Like This' and 'Oklahoma - Late Night Version'. Then by complete surprise, they released 'My Honest Face' and 'There's No Other Place' in May. 'My Honest Face' is such a fantastic tune that it brought them a massive amount of new fans. Most recently, 'Ice Cream Sundae' came out on 5 September.

'Ice Cream Sundae', to be quite honest, is a pretty solid song, but it was not the song to follow the smashing hit 'My Honest Face'.

The Analysis:

The beginning was absolutely amazing with an almost spacey sound going into their typical Inhaler bass sound ( which is one of my favourite parts ). Twenty seconds into the song, Elijah's incredible voice starts booming per usual with " I'm in the pursuit of happiness ", which is a bit of a mysterious beginning that definitely gives the song a good edge. After verse one, a shortened version of the chorus is sung. Then goes verse two. It is very similar is verse one which is a bit disappointing considering most of their other songs have more diversity of lyrics. The lyrics do change a bit, but it does leave me hungry for more Inhaler songs ( which isn't a bad thing ).

After another shortened chorus is sung, the bridge arrives and I am in love with it. The lyrics "Here's to getting hurt / To being down in the dirt " gives me goosebumps just because of how electrifying it is hearing them sung. Then for the big finale, the lengthened version of the chorus is here. " 'Cause it's easy as an ice cream sundae / Slipping outta your hand into the dirt " are probably the most memorable lyrics of the whole song for me and a perfect way to end the song. It ends promptly with the same spacey sound heard in the beginning.

I really do enjoy this stunning song, but it was not what I was expecting after 'My Honest Face'. I think that song was really difficult to follow and this song definitely tried it's best to compete but at the end of the day, 'My Honest Face' will probably be remembered as the better song. Considering though that this was the first song they've written, it's amazing.

Huge shoutout to Ryan for always keeping the songs sounding great his spectacular talent of drumming, Josh for always adding those just awesome guitar riffs, Elijah for producing the amazing voice that can only do this song justice, and Robert for playing the crap out of that bass and singing the backup vocals.
